Youth on Patrol Against Pollution (YOPAP)

YOPAP enlists young people in environmental advocacy and civic engagement to help shape long-term commitments to environmental justice. What better way to ensure our future than to get youths actively involved in decision making now? YOPAP gives young people a hands-on opportunity to make a difference in their communities. The YOPAP adventure will enrich the lives of all who become involved while building skills, relationships and abilities that last a lifetime.

YOPAP provides:

  • An opportunity to develop leadership skills
  • Civic engagement
  • A sense of community ownership
  • A chance to learn about environmental protection and environmental careers
  • A great way to learn while having fun!

Build better science skills. Get involved in your community. Tell policy makers your concerns.

Our activities include:

  • Photodocumenting environmental issues in their neighborhoods
  • Conducting environmental justice tours
  • Working on wildlife conservancy with partners such as the Belle Isle Nature Center
  • Training to start environmental justice clubs at their schools

Through the development of YOPAP chapters in churches, schools, neighborhood block clubs and civic organizations, DWEJ ensures the healthy transition of leadership in environmental stewardship for the next generation.

Community Hazard Awareness Training Seminar (CHATS)

Are you interested in the health, wealth, and safety of your community? Do you want to make your home and/or neighborhood cleaner and healthier for your kids?

Many serious hazards lurk unnoticed in our homes, offices, playgrounds and neighborhoods. To raise awareness and educate citizens about these unseen hazards, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice hold Community Hazard Awareness Training Seminars (CHATS) where Detroiters learn how to create safe and healthy environments in their homes and communities.

Through a series of training modules, participants learn:

  • How to identify and address the presence of lead in the home and in the neighborhood
  • Strategies to control asthma attacks
  • How to recognize and respond to discriminatory problems in environmental health and safety

At the conclusion of the seminar, residents receive the necessary tools and resources to address common environmental health hazards.

Call DWEJ today (313-833-3935) or complete this online form to register for Community Hazards Awareness Training.
