LET’S STAND TOGETHER

“You shouldn’t have to leave your neighborhood to live in a better one.”
– Majora Carter

In recent years, the relationship between our health and wellness and that of our planet’s has become more clear.  Illnesses caused by our environment, such as asthma, lead poisoning and cardiovascular disease, affect Detroiters more than others. This is no accident. In fact, it is by design.

From the quality of the air in our neighborhoods, the toxicity of the materials used in our homes, racist and classist policies that determined where one lives, to local laws that favor businesses over residents—environmental injustice includes the harm that happens whether we are indoors or outdoors.

As the oldest environmental justice organization in Detroit, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) works to protect our communities and to hold policymakers accountable for ensuring a healthier, cleaner city, no matter your zip code.

“DWEJ came into the community and informed the people about the environment and what we can do to help protect ourselves,”
–EDDIE LESTER
